Washington (September 19) -- Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced today that the firm will present a panel discussion titled "The Patent Reform Act of 2011 - The Growing Tension Between Protecting Invention and Competing in the Global Marketplace" at the AdvaMed annual conference on September 28 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Kilpatrick Townsend Partner Richard S. Meyer will moderate the panel. Mr. Meyer is an experienced intellectual property lawyer who focuses his practice in all aspects of high-stakes patent litigation, licensing and related counseling. The featured panelist will be recently retired Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Paul Michel. Judge Michel served on the Federal Circuit for over 20 years. He was the court’s chief judge from December 2004 until his retirement in May 2010. Rounding out the panel are Joe Matal, Judiciary Committee Counsel to Senator Jon Kyl, and David W. Highet, Vice President and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for the medical technology company, BD.

The interactive panel will address many of the issues businesses are facing or will face due to the latest Congressional attempt to protect innovation with the America Invents Act of 2011. Panelists will discuss how the changes will impact medical technology companies and how they can adapt to the new law. The panel will also explore topics such as the new post grant oppositions procedures, changes to the definition of prior art, prior user rights and the new first-to-file system.
